Congratulations to Nick Giles (OP 1991) who was awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List for services to the health of the nation.

After leaving PGS, Nick studied marketing at the University of the West of England, following up with a postgraduate diploma in direct and digital marketing in 1996-97.

He enjoyed a range of roles across a number of organisations before joining Ordnance Survey (OS) in 2012. He is now Managing Director of OS Leisure, where he has been instrumental in striving to help more people to get outside more often. From supporting the traditional outdoor enthusiast to discover new adventures, to inspiring a new wave of people of all ages to start exploring.

Commenting on the recognition Nick declared himself "overwhelmed" and added "it's really difficult to put into words how humbling it feels to receive this OBE award.

"I have always had a love for the outdoors and since joining Ordnance Survey I have worked with an excellent team striving to help more people to get outside more often.

"We live in a country packed full of amazing landscapes and places to visit and enjoy. The benefits of regular exercise and getting outside are enormous for both our physical and mental health and it makes me extremely proud when I look back at how we are helping more people to get outside and stay active.

"I am especially proud of the role Ordnance Survey has played through the pandemic and how our mapping, walking and cycling routes, and inspiring content has supported millions of people to get outside safely.

"I don't see this as an award for me, but I see this as a recognition for the entire OS team. I have the privilege to work with some amazing people who share my passion to help to improve the health of the nation."
