Obituaries

We are saddened to report the sudden death of former music teacher, Geoff Mason, on 29th September 2021, at the age of 90.

He started work as a peripatetic trumpet teacher in 1976 and retired in 2012. He is remembered for creating a disciplined but fun atmosphere in rehearsals when leading at various times, the Wind Band, the PGS and Portsmouth High School tours of Holland, France and Germany, the PGS Swing Band and the Concert Band.

Described as “the old king of swing”, he stood down from the Concert Band in 1996 but continued with the brass quintet and individual tuition.  He was noted for his dapper appearance, conducting in a white DJ at concerts.

He also taught at Seaford College and Prebendal School, was Musical Director of the Portsmouth City Band, member of Portsmouth Chorus and Waterlooville Golf Club.
