Valerie Agar
Former member of staff
July 1944 - June 2026
With our thanks to Valerie's daughter Juliette
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Valerie Agar, a much-loved former member of The Portsmouth Grammar School community.
Valerie dedicated many years of service to The Portsmouth Grammar School as a secretary, where she became a familiar and valued presence to generations of pupils, parents and colleagues. She approached every day with warmth, kindness and an unmistakable sense of humour, bringing comfort, encouragement and laughter to those around her. Her genuine care for others and her willingness to help wherever she could made her an integral part of school life.
Beyond her professional role, Valerie will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her resilience and her ability to make people feel welcome. She built lasting friendships across the school, and many former colleagues and pupils will remember her not only for what she did, but for the kindness with which she did it.
Outside of school, Valerie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was the centre of her world, and she took immense pride in their lives and achievements. A woman of quiet Christian faith, she died while on pilgrimage with her husband - an ending that reflected the faith that had guided her throughout her life.
Valerie’s passing leaves a deep sense of loss, but her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her compassion, humour and unwavering kindness. She will be remembered with great affection by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her.
The thoughts and prayers of The Portsmouth Grammar School community are with Valerie’s family and friends at this difficult time.
Any charity donations in her memory, can be made to Taylor & Wallis, for her chosen charities, including The Children's Society for whom she campaigned for many years.
