Barry (Barrington Michael) Guyer

Barry died suddenly and unexpectedly on 21st August 2023. He followed three of his uncles into PGS and in turn was followed by his younger brother and then two nephews.

After Sixth Form he went to Trinity Hall Cambridge to read Medicine and spent a great deal of his time playing chess and rowing. After Cambridge he did his clinical training at Guy’s Hospital followed by House appointment at St Mary’s Hospital Portsmouth. He there met Janet, a midwife, who had three young daughters. Barry and Janet married in 1973 and Barry became a much loved and loving father to the three girls and then to seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

On obtaining his full medical registration he joined his father Sam in his then single hand General Practice in Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth. In 1979, after Sam had retired, Barry joined up with another practice where the late Colin Arnold (OP 1953) was a partner.  Barry was instrumental in the design of a new purpose-built surgery Queens Road Portsmouth.

However General Practice was not really for Barry and in 1974 he went into the pharmaceutical industry, first with Warners, then Bristol Myers and then Allergan Inc of America and he became the UK Medical Director of Allergan. He travelled for his work extensively in Europe and the Middle East as well as paying regular visits to Allergan in Orange County California.

During his time at Allergan he was instrumental in researching the use of Botulinum Toxins in the treatment of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia and published a number of research papers which have subsequently been referred to in well over 900 scientific papers.

On retirement from Allergan in 1998 he set up and ran for the next five years his own consultancy.

In June 1999 he and Janet moved to Salisbury where Barry became an enthusiastic member of the local Bowls club qualifying as a County instructor. His interest in computers led to him designing the websites for the Amesbury Bowls Club and Frome Symphony Orchestra as well as becoming a member of the local Apple Mac users Group.  His extensive knowledge of computers was put to good use when he became a Wiltshire Bobby Van Man advising senior citizens on how to avoid being scammed or hacked.

As a young boy Barry played the Violin but subsequently the Cello and as a Cellist he became a member of the Frome Symphony Orchestra.
